Your spine and the muscles that support it rest while sleeping at night. While in a horizontal position during sleep, proper maintenance is essential for reducing and avoiding back pain during the few hours you are in the bed. It is no surprise that sleeping on uneven surfaces, with poor support, can cause a backache. Sinking too deeply into the mattress can move the joints from their proper position, causing twisting, which leads to discomfort. But sleeping on too rigid surfaces can prevent the spine from staying in the right position. Years ago, doctors often recommended people with back pain to sleep on a very hard mattress. But this is no longer the case. Recent studies have shown that people who sleep on very hard mattresses (sometimes called orthopedic) have the worst sleep quality.

The types of mattresses that are best suited to relieve pain usually have memory foam layers, quality latex, or other softening materials. High-quality mattresses with memory foam layers fit the shape of the sleeping body best. Proper support and alignment mean that the material allows wider body parts, such as hips and shoulders, to sink, while lighter areas of the body, such as the waist and neck simply lie on top.

 

Sleeping on a natural surface for the spine with proper support relieves pressure that is usually associated with a lot of back pain. This allows the spine to fit properly and to stand upright. A poor support area forces the body to rest in an unnatural position and prevents tensioned muscles from fully relaxing. The ideal bed should meet the needs and preferences of every single person. Some people prefer the sensation of memory foam, while others prefer the sensation of latex. Things like materials, layer thickness and hardness depend to some extent on body weight, sleeping position, and other factors. But there are some basic guidelines that can help you prepare in the search for a mattress.

Why are softening layers necessary in mattress design?

Old spring mattresses were flat, without additional softening top layer. The springs do not allow the sleeping person to lie down evenly, whether he is on one side or on his back. Such flat surfaces force a person to curl his spine while sleeping in search of a comfortable position, as the inner knee does not gain support. This prevents decompression of the lower back and causes many pains and strains. Why is that? Let's imagine the following situation during sleep. The hips and shoulders are parts of the body that stand out most; foot heel too. As long as you are lying on your back, your hips touch the mattress, your shoulders unfold, and your heels cling - all come in contact with the surface of the mattress. However, the lumbar region is arched, for stiffer beds, there may be a noticeable space between the lower back and the bed, there is no stable support for the inside of the knees, and the head falls backward.

This type of body position causes tension in the muscles. It also prevents the proper alignment of the spine. That does not sound comfortable at all, does it? A layer of memory foam, latex or memory fluff in the case - that's what a good mattress needs. These surfaces do not force the spine to curl and to lay in unnatural positions, while you sleep. Instead, they allow the parts of the body that need to sink to do so, while at the same time supporting the places that require it. The hips and shoulders are taken up by the mattress while the lower back is fully supported and can be relaxed.

We advise you to pay attention to the quality of materials. There are cheap mattresses made with raw materials that contain potentially harmful chemicals.
